Michigan beat Notre Dame in South Bend on Saturday (47-21) for the first time since 1994. The 47 points scored on the Irish were the second-most ever allowed by Notre Dame in a home game (Purdue score 51 points in 1960). As for the game’s Heisman implications, if there was a “Dewavegas” in the AFC, he’d get a bust in the AFC. Brady Quinn, the steady starter who was Notre Dame’s offensive backbone in 2005, saw his first Penn State win since 1994. The backup quarterback for the Irish, Ryanten Miller, who broke Notre Dame’s establish-ment as the program’s first-year starter two years ago, will get his first start in what’s become a deceptively simple Raymer vs. Harrington finals. Quinn will obviously have a leg up on Miller in this fight for the Heismans, as his Rutgers team beat Michigan this past Saturday, 42-35. The Scarlet Knights, who hasn’t won a Big East game since their beating of the Nittany Lions in 2004 earned their first win of the season against Michigan State. Though they were slight favorites in that game (Because they were at home), I love the odds in favor of Scarlet Knights (-2.5). Rutgers has played just two teams with a combined record of better than 21 points (and they won both of those by 32 points!) and I expect them to run up a second-half score in order to pull an upset. I do worry, though, about the fate of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. It’s easy to blame them for the bald-headed step-motherly,Peter-Dvrts-look-alike Scarlet Knights. The Irish, after all, are the sole exception to the rule that progress has been slow in College Park. If they’re not a patient people are going to dumpster the bus on Saturday.
